Stella’s Story: From mistrust to forgiveness on board an aeroplane

Stella was relieved to take her seat in the business class of the aircraft. However, the man sitting next to her objected to her presence, telling the flight attendant that the elderly woman should move to economy class.

The flight attendant firmly objected, noting that it was her rightful seat, and did not give in to the man’s reproach. In the end, Stella remained in her seat, but the incident shook her. She decided to tell her life story – both bitter and touching.

‘I don’t want to sit next to that… woman!’ – Franklin Delaney exclaimed, turning to the flight attendant who had accompanied the elderly passenger and informed her that she would be sitting next to him.

“Sir, that’s her seat. We can’t change anything,” the flight attendant replied, trying to calm the irritated businessman.

The man objected reproachfully, citing the cost of the tickets and the woman’s modest clothing, “She couldn’t buy a seat like that. Look at her clothes!”

Stella felt embarrassed; she wore her best, but suffered from the fact that those around her were able to see the simplicity of her outfit. The gazes of the other business class passengers were drawn to the conflict, and Stella lowered her eyes.

As a result, the altercation delayed boarding the plane. Additionally, several flight attendants tried to settle the dispute. Unfortunately, some of the passengers agreed with the man, believing that the woman did not deserve to sit in business class and demanded that she be relocated.

It was an extremely humiliating moment for Stella. Finally, turning to the flight attendant, she agreed to change seats if there was a free row in economy class, even though she had spent all her savings on the ticket.

The elderly woman was soft and grateful, as she was being helped through the Seattle-Tacoma airport, which seemed complicated and confusing.
At 85, it was her first time travelling and she needed support, so the airline assigned her an attendant who walked her to boarding.
The flight attendant stood her ground despite protests from the businessman, who couldn’t believe the woman had actually bought business class, showing her boarding pass. She then looked sternly at Stella, but without malice.

‘You paid for this seat, and you deserve to sit here, despite your objections,’ the flight attendant emphasised. The man was threatened to call the police if he didn’t stop the scandal.

Sighing, he relented and Stella was able to remain at her seat. The flight took off, but she was so scared she dropped her purse. Luckily, the man helped her pick her things up by being kind.

During this minor incident, a ruby pendant also fell, which immediately caught his attention. Franklin noticed that the jewellery was unusual and beautiful.

“I am an antique jeweller and this pendant is quite valuable. These are real rubies, aren’t they?” – he shared and handed the jewellery back to Stella.

Shocked, she explained that she had received the pendant from her mother, to whom it had been given by her father, who had not returned from the war. It was a gift, a symbol of hope and love.

“My father was a military pilot in World War II. He went to the front, leaving my mother this pendant as a promise to return, but he never did,” Stella recounted.

‘It’s a terrible fate,’ Franklin lamented.

Stella admitted that despite the financial hardship, no one in their family had ever considered selling the pendant. It became a keeper of her father’s memory and a symbol of resilience.

The pendant held two photos: Stella’s parents and the baby.
The photographs reminded the old man of love and family ties that are not tangible at first sight.
When Franklin asked about the child in the photograph, Stella explained that it was her son who was the reason she was flying this time.

The story wasn’t an easy one: she gave birth to her son alone and had to give him up for adoption because she couldn’t give him a decent life without support.

With the help of DNA tests and the help of a neighbourhood girl, she managed to find her son, who, however, refused further contact, not needing his mother.

Explaining her trip, Stella said she had flown in for her son’s birthday – an opportunity unlikely to present itself again given her age and condition.

Meanwhile, several flight attendants and passengers listened to her story with a genuine interest and sympathy they had not shown before.

When the pilot announced the approach to New York, he abruptly added: “Greetings to my birth mother, travelling on my flight for the first time. I look forward to seeing you after landing.” It was Stella’s son John.

Tears filled the woman’s eyes, and Franklin smiled, already feeling remorse for his behaviour.

Upon leaving the cockpit, John broke standard protocol by going straight to Stella to hug her tightly.

Passengers and staff applauded, sharing this touching moment of reunion.

In a private conversation, John admitted that he was not angry with his mother and was grateful for her act, although he was not immediately able to express his feelings.

Stella, in turn, calmed her son, explaining that she understood and forgave what had happened.

The main lessons learnt from this story are:

  • You can’t judge people by their appearance or assume justifications for rudeness.
  • Forgiveness has a powerful force and can change relationships.
  • Everyone deserves respect no matter the circumstances.

Franklin realised his mistake and, despite his initial resentment, managed to apologise. Stella, on the other hand, met him with kindness, demonstrating the true power of compassion.

The story of this encounter is a reminder of the importance of tolerance and respect that everyone needs in our world.

May this touching story inspire us to be kind and understanding, even in difficult situations.
