When Melania Trump appeared at the Smithsonian Museum this week, the public’s attention should have been focused on the legacy. On the significance of the moment. On the white inaugural dress, which has now officially become part of the national archive. But instead, many people’s eyes were drawn lower down — straight to the trousers, which no one had expected to see her wearing.

The former First Lady visited the Smithsonian Institution to formally donate her garment to the ‘First Ladies’ collection at the National Museum of American History. She donated the elegant white ball gown she wore to Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration in January 2025. The outfit was designed by her long-time stylist and close confidant Hervé Pierre, and until that moment the dress had only been seen on that historic evening less than a year ago.

But whilst the dress itself symbolised tradition, Melania’s look for the museum visit clearly went beyond the usual.
She chose very fitted black leather trousers — a bold choice rarely associated with official appearances in Washington. Paired with high, textured leather boots by Christian Louboutin, the look was sharp, confident and distinctly modern.

It was no accident. Leather has long held a special place in Melania’s style. She does not follow seasonal trends to justify her clothing choices. She values this material for its clean lines and inherent strength, often using it as a way to make a conscious fashion statement.
This time, she went all out with it.

The look was completed by an all-black ensemble: a impeccably tailored coat from Bottega Veneta, worn over a simple black turtleneck. The result was an outfit that looked both elegant and commanding — understated, put-together and very much in her style. And, as always, her striking, meticulously styled blonde hair stood out even more against the dark palette, appearing even lighter and more striking.
And yet it was hard not to wonder: were these really the slimmest trousers she had ever worn to an official event?

The occasion itself was indeed of historic significance. By donating her 2025 inauguration dress, Melania became the only First Lady to have two different dresses represented in the national collection — a distinction that sets her apart in the history of US presidential fashion.
However, for many observers, this historic moment shared the spotlight with a far less traditional detail.

For whilst the white dress has already become part of history, it was the leather trousers that ensured this appearance would be remembered for a long time to come.
