Why Melania Trump has no intention of leaving her husband, despite his scandals
Through scandals, silence and constant media attention, the First Lady of the United States continues to stand by her husband. Whilst the whole world debates her loyalty and motives, those who know her better than most insist that a clear pattern has long been evident in her behaviour.
Amid years of political turmoil, high-profile personal stories and the relentless glare of the spotlight, Melania Trump remains a calm, reserved and almost inscrutable figure alongside her 80-year-old husband, President Donald Trump.
Her cool reserve and outward calm have fuelled rumours and speculation for years. But for those who know the 56-year-old former model really well, her decision to remain in this marriage has never seemed a mystery.

A long-standing friend recounted what she had observed from the sidelines
In 2003, whilst working at Vogue, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff — a writer, former adviser and close friend — met Melania, who was then a model and dating Donald. A close bond developed between the two women. “We’ve been through a lot over the past fifteen years,” Stephanie said in an interview with ABC News in 2020.
Following Donald’s victory in the 2016 election, Stephanie was brought in to help organise the inauguration, and later became an unpaid adviser to the First Lady. This allowed her to gain a very close insight into Melania’s private world – both during the transition period and in the early months of the new administration.
This insider’s perspective was particularly evident at one of the key moments of the election campaign, when the media published the Access Hollywood tape in which Donald made crude and offensive comments about women. The public reaction was swift and harsh, and many began to wonder how Melania would respond.

Stephanie recalled that she had met Melania for lunch that day and had expected to see a woman in a state of distress. “She was beaming, she was smiling,” she said. “It looked as though nothing had happened.”
Trying to lighten the mood, Stephanie joked: ‘I said to her, “How many times have you heard those words and the word ‘president’ in the same sentence?” And we both laughed.’ Later, Stephanie added: ‘She knew who she was marrying… She understood what she was getting herself into, and he understood it too.’
Although Stephanie later said she felt betrayed by Melania, she still spoke with a certain admiration of the First Lady’s ability to maintain control. According to her, Melania always exuded a quiet confidence that remained unwavering and even had a calming effect on those around her.
The former aide explained her view

In May 2024, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham offered a rare insight into how Melania perceives the situation and why she is not stepping down.
In an interview with CNN, the former press secretary acknowledged that the media attention surrounding Donald’s personal scandals could be humiliating for Melania. However, she said this did not in any way mean that the First Lady was planning to leave her husband.
At the same time, she made it clear: Melania is staying. “Yes, she knew who she was marrying,” said the former aide. “She’s happy; she has a very good life. She’s not going anywhere; that’s already been proven.”***
Sources speak of her increasing distance from politics

Melania’s distance from politics is no accident. According to a 2021 CNN report, several people close to her claimed that she has no plans to return actively to public life, even if her husband secures a second term.
“Being First Lady again is not what she wants,” one source told the publication. “For her, that was a chapter of her life. And it’s over. That’s it.”
The article also mentioned her well-known reluctance to take part in campaign events. One political aide from Trump’s 2016 team admitted: “We simply stopped asking altogether,” after she repeatedly refused to attend campaign events.
As First Lady, Melania led an extremely low-key public life: she gave fewer than five on-camera interviews and did not grant a single written interview — a level of seclusion almost unheard of for someone in such a position.

Long before the White House placed her under constant media scrutiny, Melania’s life revolved around privacy, routine and quiet ambitions. On 13 October 2025, reports emerged revealing rare details of her personal life prior to meeting Donald.
She has said on more than one occasion that she prefers to keep her private life to herself, although the attention of the cameras was never anything new to her. “I’m not afraid of the media. I’m not camera-shy. It’s my job. It’s my modelling career. But sometimes it can be very difficult, unpleasant and unfair,” she admitted.
Melania’s quiet life in New York
During the years when Melania lived alone in New York, her lifestyle was calm and disciplined. It was reported that she walked with ankle weights, ate at least seven pieces of fruit every day and strictly adhered to her skincare routine.

She wasn’t drawn to the club scene and usually gave the late-night parties a miss. A typical evening might go something like this: dinner at Cipriani at ten o’clock in the evening, followed by a return home around one o’clock in the morning.
According to her acquaintances, she was attracted to wealthy and successful European men. People close to her said that she would occasionally go out with Italians and high-society playboys, but more often than not it would be limited to dinner, after which she would soon return home.

Melania adhered to a strict routine: workouts, swimming, the sauna and rest. If she had no engagements or modelling shoots, she preferred to stay at home. Back then, her style was more understated. Later, having gained access to haute couture and designer brands, she noticeably changed her wardrobe and now often appears in her signature Manolo Blahnik shoes.
What friends said about Melania Trump
‘She was quite reserved; the first party she ever went to with me was the very one where she met Donald Trump,’ recalled her friend Edith Molnar. Paolo Zampolli, president of ID Models — the agency that discovered Melania and brought her to New York in 1996 — also described her as a ‘homebody’.
‘Before Donald, she didn’t go out with anyone in New York. She went to the cinema on her own and worked out at the gym,” he added. And yet, several men claimed to have been part of Melania’s romantic past before Donald. Here’s what is known about them.
Alleged first boyfriend — Peter Butoln

A man named Peter Butoln once claimed to have been Melania’s first boyfriend and shared his memories of her teenage years in Slovenia, including the story of how they met. “She was my first love,” Peter admitted in an interview with Inside Edition. “My first true love.”
Melania, who was born in the small town of Sevnica with a population of around five thousand, met Peter, according to him, after moving to Ljubljana at the age of seventeen, where she enrolled at an elite school.
He recounted that he approached her when he spotted her in the city centre, as he was immediately struck by her beauty. However, their relationship ended when he left for military service, and they never saw each other again after that.
Peter’s last contact with Melania was a postcard she sent him in 1987, shortly after they parted ways. ‘I’m sending you this postcard with warm regards from the coast,’ it reportedly said. He kept it for many years.

Despite these fond memories, a spokesperson for the First Lady clarified that Peter had never been her boyfriend.
Her last Slovenian boyfriend was Jure Zorčič
Melania’s ex-boyfriend, Jure Zorčič, has also spoken publicly about their past. In an interview with ABC News, he said that she stood out even in her youth. “She wanted to live abroad — in Italy, France, in the world of fashion,” he said. “She was very stylish.”
They met in 1991 in Slovenia. Jure was riding his motorbike at the time and saw her walking down the street. “There was a moment when I thought: ‘Wow, who’s that girl? She’s so beautiful, I’ve got to turn round and follow her’,” he recalled of their first meeting, which, in his words, was almost like a scene from a Hollywood film.

He stopped, struck up a conversation with her and invited her for a coffee. They dated for several months and often spent time with friends on the Croatian coast.
Yura admitted that he was surprised when she suddenly left Slovenia to pursue a career in modelling. She later lived in Paris and Milan, before moving to New York.
They met again in 2000. He recalled being surprised to hear her speaking English and asked if she had forgotten that she was Slovenian. In 2005, Melania married Donald.
“I think her marriage to Trump was fate,” said Jure. “Twenty years ago, nobody believed she’d be living on top of the world, on Fifth Avenue in Trump Tower – not even her!”
As well as Peter and Jure, Melania’s friend, the writer Stephanie, recounted in her book Melania and Me that the model had a boyfriend whilst living abroad — in Paris and Milan — but did not reveal any details. According to Stephanie, she also had a few casual dates.
Why her marriage to Donald Trump is working
Ultimately, Melania found in Donald the man she herself described as a suitable partner. According to Vladimira Tomšić, a woman who attended the same school and is close to Melania’s parents, the reason this marriage is holding up is linked to the First Lady’s upbringing.
In her view, Melania is the ideal wife for Donald, and the two of them make a well-suited couple who complement and support one another.
During one interview, Melania dismissed suggestions that she had been dating her then 53-year-old businessman boyfriend for money. She said that you cannot talk to beautiful things or hug them.
Melania also once joked that the secret to her long marriage to Donald was having separate bathrooms. She responded to her critics too: ‘They don’t know me,’ she said, describing Donald as a ‘very kind’ and ‘very charming’ man.

Melania recently accompanied her husband to his birthday celebrations
Melania’s husband marked his 80th birthday with a spectacle the likes of which had never before been held at the White House: a UFC mixed martial arts tournament, organised on the South Lawn on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
The temporary arena drew thousands of spectators, whilst even more people watched the action unfold on large screens nearby, at the Ellipse. The fighters competed inside an octagonal metal mesh cage beneath a structure known as ‘The Claw’ — a huge metal structure equipped with lighting, sound systems and screens.
Donald began the evening alongside UFC President Dana White. They walked from the Oval Office to the Blue Room balcony to view the octagon, and then stood as the national anthem was played, whilst fighter jets flew overhead.
The event was attended by many high-profile guests, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with whom Donald had a brief chat during the fights.
Despite the summer heat, Donald wore a suit and tie and spent most of the time watching the bouts from ringside. Later, he donned a white ‘USA’ cap during the bout between Sean O’Malley and the Canadian Ayman Zahabi, and after his victory, Sean shook Donald’s hand and saluted him.
Melania was also by the President’s side at the event, and the pair could be seen chatting during the first bout between Diego López and Steve Garcia.

Melania’s journey from a small town in Slovenia to becoming the First Lady of the United States is a story of discipline, ambition and mystery. Much has been said about her past, but she has always remained private, allowing the world to see only glimpses of her true self.
She has consistently demonstrated composure and poise — qualities that continue to define her image to this day. She may be praised for her elegance or criticised for her silence, but Melania’s story remains one of quiet strength and strict control over how the world perceives her.
