Claire understood that the conversation had reached a dead end.
For Daniel and Margaret, everything had already been decided.
Any refusal from Claire would automatically be treated as selfishness.
After Margaret left, Claire remained in the kitchen with her husband.
“Do you honestly think it’s normal for me to leave my own home?”
Daniel sighed.
“You’re twisting everything again.”
“What am I twisting?”
“No one is throwing you out. We’re talking about a temporary move.”
“Out of my apartment.”
“Because Emily and the children need it more.”
“After work, I need quiet, a real bed, and the right to be in my own home.”
“Mom’s place is quiet too.”
Claire looked at him in disbelief.
“Daniel, this is my apartment.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you agree to give it to your sister without even asking me?”
He made an irritated gesture.
“Because we’re family. We have to help our relatives.”
“There are different ways to help.”
“Certainly. But this is the simplest option.”
Claire realized there was no point continuing. He was not trying to understand her. He was simply waiting for her to surrender.
The following evening, she came home even more exhausted than usual.
When she opened the door, she immediately noticed unfamiliar bags in the hallway.
Children’s jackets hung from the hooks.
Several boxes stood against the wall.
Laughter drifted out from the living room.
Claire moved forward slowly.
Emily was sitting on the sofa with Sophie on her lap.
Ethan was on the floor among a collection of toy cars.
Bags, toys, and boxes of clothing had already filled the room.
It looked as though they had not come for a visit at all.
They had moved in.
“Hi, Claire!” Emily said brightly. “Thank you so much. Mom said you agreed to let us stay.”
Claire stared at her for several seconds.
Then she looked around her own living room, where other people’s belongings had already begun taking over the space.
“Who told you I agreed?”
Emily’s smile disappeared.
At that moment, Margaret appeared from the hallway.
“Oh, Claire, you’re home! Wonderful. You can help us sort everything out. Tomorrow we’ll move your things over to my place.”
She spoke with complete calm, as though this arrangement had been approved and scheduled days ago.
Claire turned toward her.
“Why exactly am I supposed to vacate my own apartment for your daughter?”
The room went silent.
Margaret’s face hardened.
“We discussed all of this yesterday.”
“No. Yesterday you told me what you had decided. I never agreed.”
“Claire, don’t start this now. The children are already here.”
“I can see that.”
“Emily has brought all her things.”
“I can see that too.”
“So what are we supposed to do now? Put them out on the street?”
Claire did not answer.
She simply turned and walked into the bedroom.
After closing the door, she stood in front of the mirror for several seconds.
The woman looking back at her was exhausted. She worked six days a week, paid for and maintained her own home, and had somehow ended up in a situation where other people were explaining why they had a greater right to her apartment than she did.
Then, unexpectedly, Claire became calm.
A simple truth settled inside her.
No one had the right to decide what happened to her apartment without her permission.
Not even her husband.
Not even his mother.
Not even his divorced sister with two children.
Claire pulled a large travel bag from the wardrobe.
She opened Daniel’s section of the closet.
Then she began packing his shirts.
His jeans.
His sweaters.
His socks.
His documents.
His chargers.
Emily appeared in the bedroom doorway.
“Claire, what are you doing?”
“I’m packing Daniel’s things.”
“Why?”
“You’ll find out soon.”
By the time Daniel returned, two large bags stood in the hallway.
He opened the door, saw them, and froze.
“What is this?”
“Your belongings.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean exactly what it looks like.”
He glanced at his mother, then at his sister.
“What happened?”
Claire stepped out of the bedroom.
“Nothing unusual. The three of you decided who would live in my apartment without me. Now I’ve decided who will not be living here.”
“Claire, are you serious?”
“Completely.”
“You’re throwing me out because of my sister?”
“No. I’m asking you to leave because you tried to control my property behind my back.”
Margaret immediately stepped in.
“Why do you keep talking about property? You’re husband and wife!”
“Exactly,” Claire replied. “And husbands and wives are supposed to make decisions like this together.”
Daniel raised his voice.
“Emily has already arrived! Where do you expect her to go now?”
“Back where she came from. Or into a rental apartment. I offered to help her financially.”
“That’s cruel!”
“Is moving people into my home without my permission not cruel?”
Emily silently began gathering the children’s things.
“Mom, let’s go,” she said quietly.
“We are not going anywhere!” Margaret protested. “Daniel will speak to his wife, and she’ll calm down.”
Claire looked at her husband.
“There is nothing left to discuss.”
“Claire, don’t make a scene.”
