Very little is known about the first lady of North Korea, although journalists are no less interested in the wife of the country’s leader than in him.
The showiness with which Lee Sol appears in public places, often violating the generally accepted norms established for the rest of the majority of the beautiful half of her country, has become quite familiar.
Lee Seol gave her husband three children, and this also gave her a lot of popularity in the world tabloids. A halo of mystery hovering over this woman, only fuels interest in her person, but most of the attempts of paparazzi “peek behind the scenes” unsuccessful.

During her student years, she was fond of singing, taking part in all possible festivals, including in South Korea. Somehow she got permission to study singing in China, which was very rare in those years.
After the courses in China, Lee Sol successfully performed in the Pochon ensemble, whose main repertoire was patriotic songs. Kim Jong Il often listened to the songs of the group, and did not miss the opportunity to attend the concerts of the group.
When the country’s leaders changed, Lee Sol began to regularly appear at formal and informal events with Kim Jong-un, causing a lot of rumors and gossip.
All rumors were dispelled by an official North Korean media report that Lee Sol is the legal wife of the country’s leader. History keeps silent when and where their wedding took place, not a single photo from the ceremony has been found so far. Speculation also varies on the date when Kim and Lee formalized their relationship, with the difference ranging from 2007 to 2010.
Even South Korean intelligence is unable to accurately track what is going on in Kim Jong-un and Lee Seol-ju’s family. Intelligence officials are even confused about the birth dates of Kim and Lee’s children.
The First Lady has a noticeably relaxed demeanor in everything, starting with her manner of dress. In North Korea, women are “recommended” (strongly) a strict suit and maximum modesty in behavior. Against this background, Lee Seol’s rather short skirts and her infectious laughter next to her husband look, so to speak, unconventional for the rest of the mass of women, as well as Lee’s shoes, preferring high heels.
Lee Seol is a very beautiful woman, both by North Korean and European standards, but in fashion she is more inclined to the trends of the latter. Apparently with an eye on his wife, Kim Jong-un once lifted the ban on pants for women, as well as high heels and jewelry, which drew mixed reactions from hardened moralists.
Instead of the obligatory badge, which bears portraits of the country’s leaders, Lee Seol wears brooches with precious stones. Of course, the North Korean media found an explanation for this, saying that this way the first lady emphasizes that except for Kim Jong-un there are no other representatives of the stronger sex.
Dior and Chanel are Lee Seol’s favorite brands. It is from these brands that she has a whole collection of handbags, in which she is reproached by imported journalists, pointing to the low standard of living of ordinary citizens.
Lee Sol became the first woman to participate with a political leader in public events; before that, the spouses of North Korean leaders did not allow their wives to take such “liberties”. Moreover, the range of events where Lee Sol appears is very diverse, from meetings of the General Staff to entertaining walks with her husband to the zoo or dolphinarium.
Many note the positive influence of Lee Seol on her emotional and irascible spouse. Family happiness and home comfort have a very favorable effect on Kim Jong-un, including his state decisions.
Lee Sol is the hope of many North Koreans for positive changes in the country, which is currently covered with a veil of bans and restrictions, and for this we can respect Kim Jong-un’s wife endlessly.
