Donald Trump recently spoke candidly about one such family dispute, admitting that his wife Melania is not at all keen on his famous ‘trademark’ dance moves, which he performs in public. According to him, she considers such behaviour somewhat inappropriate for a national leader and is convinced that it does not fit with the image of the president.
During a recent meeting with Republicans, Trump decided to lighten the formal atmosphere of the event and shared a personal story from his family life. Instead of limiting himself to purely political topics, he gave the audience a glimpse behind the scenes of his daily life and admitted that the First Lady remains his harshest critic when it comes to his energetic performances on stage. As Trump explained, Melania is convinced that the head of the White House should behave with greater restraint and dignity, especially in public.
Trump went on to say that his wife often compares him to historical figures and reminds him how presidents of the past behaved. Quoting her almost verbatim, he turned the moment into a mixture of jest and revelation:
‘She can’t stand it when I dance. I say, “Everyone wants me to dance.” And she replies, “Darling, it’s not presidential.” She actually said to me, “Can you imagine Franklin Roosevelt dancing?” Yes, that’s exactly what she said to me.’
Despite Melania’s obvious displeasure and her barbed remarks, it seems to have almost no effect on Trump’s behaviour. He remains convinced that his supporters genuinely enjoy his spontaneous dancing and see it as part of his vibrant personality. For him, such moments are not a breach of protocol, but a way to connect with the audience and give the crowd an extra boost of energy.
