She said she was too busy for a date – and then I saw her at the cinema with another man! I taught her a lesson she will never forget!

I never thought I would be the guy who would catch his girlfriend cheating on him, but life has a way of throwing up unexpected situations.

For three years, Mia and I had what I thought was a solid and loving relationship.

Sure, there were ups and downs, but I always thought we were doing well together.

That was the case until last Friday.

All week I had been looking forward to our date.

It had been a rough patch at work and I just wanted to relax with Mia, maybe go out to dinner and watch a film.

When I asked her about our plans, she sighed tiredly, not even looking away from her phone.

‘Alex, no way tonight,’ she said. – ‘I’m swamped at work, loads of stuff to do. Maybe next week?’

Frustrated but understanding, I said it was fine.

Everyone gets busy and I didn’t want to seem like a pushy bloke.

So I decided to meet up with my friend Mark and have a drink with him.

An hour later we were already sitting in a bar downtown when Mark suggested we go to a late night movie.

It seemed like a great way to distract myself and I agreed.

We bought tickets, grabbed popcorn, and got comfortable.

But as soon as the trailers ended and the lights dimmed in the auditorium, I noticed something that made my heart sink.

A few rows in front of us sat Mia.

But not alone.

She was laughing, leaning into some guy, their heads close together, whispering something.

His hand rested carelessly on her chair, as if they’d been dating for ages.

I felt anger boiling up inside me.

My heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear anything.

I didn’t want to believe my eyes.

Maybe it was just a coincidence?

Could it be an old friend?

But then she turned slightly, and I saw her smile-the soft, flirtatious smile, the same one she’d once given me.

Mark nudged me with his elbow.

‘Dude… isn’t that Mia?’

I nodded, clenching my jaw so hard it hurt.

I could have walked right up to her, made a scene, demanded an explanation.

But instead, I forced myself to calm down.

I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of seeing her break me.

‘Let’s go,’ I whispered to Mark, getting up.

I needed to think, to make sense of everything.

But more than anything, I wanted to teach Mia a lesson she wouldn’t forget.

The next day, I kept my cool.

I didn’t write or call her.

I wanted to see if she’d talk about last night.

Sure enough, in the afternoon she texted me.

‘Hi darling, how was your evening? I hope you had a good rest! I’m still swamped at work.’

Work? Good move.

I replied casually.

‘Yeah, just hanging out with Mark. Hope you got everything done in time!’

She sent a heart-shaped emoji, not even realising I knew everything.

That’s when I realised – she doesn’t even feel guilty because she thinks she didn’t get caught.

That same night, I decided to put my plan into action.

I called Mia and told her I had a surprise for her.

‘I know you’re really tired right now, so I planned something special for you,’ I said making my voice excited.

‘Put on something pretty. I’ll pick you up at seven.’

She sounded delighted.

‘Alex, that’s so nice! I’m looking forward to it!’

I was looking forward to it too.

At exactly seven, I picked her up and took her to an expensive restaurant she had long dreamed of.

I watched her order her favourite dishes, her eyes shining as she told me how thoughtful I was.

And then, as she reached for her glass of wine, I leaned in slightly and quietly asked:

‘So… how was the film last night?’

Her hand froze.

The blood rushed away from her face.

‘W-what?’ – she mumbled.

I tilted my head to the side.

‘You know, the one you went to with that guy? The one you lied to me about?’

Her mouth dropped open, but no words came out.

I pulled out my phone and slowly flicked through the pictures.

‘I even have a snapshot. In case you need a reminder.’

She gulped.

‘Alex, I can explain-’

‘You don’t have to,’ I interrupted.

‘I just wanted to give you one more special night before you lost me forever.’

I got up, put the money on the table and walked away, leaving her sitting in stunned silence.

mia tried to call and write to me for days, but I didn’t answer.

One day she even came to my house, but Mark was there, so I asked her to leave.

Was it painful? Of course it did.

But I realised something important.

When a man shows you who he really is, believe him.

Mia had been lying to me for who knows how long.

She disrespected me, abused my trust and thought I’d never find out.

But I did.

And instead of letting her break me, I walked away with dignity.

It was a real lesson.

For both of us.
