Phoebe thought her day couldn’t get any worse when she came home to find her sister Holly and her family had moved into her house without even asking! And just when it seemed all hope was lost, a knock at the door brought an unexpected twist of instant karma.
When Phoebe was growing up, she had always been close to her older sister Holly. They shared everything — dreams, laughter and secrets. But after Holly got married, their relationship changed. They began to drift apart, and Phoebe never expected what happened just a few days ago.
At 31, Phoebe was proud of her cosy three-bedroom home. After ten years of hard work, she had finally paid it off. Of course, she sometimes envied her friends who lived in chic apartments in the city centre, but in the end, the house belonged to her, and that meant more to her than any luxurious high-rise.
Holly, on the other hand, had always been more carefree and adventurous. At 38, married with two children, Holly and her husband Nicholas loved to talk about quitting their jobs to ‘live life to the fullest’ and ‘escape the rat race.’ Phoebe tried to tolerate their carefree attitude, but it often drove her crazy.
‘Life is too short to be stuck in a cubicle, Phoebe,’ Holly insisted during family dinners. Nicholas nodded, adding, ‘Think of all the experiences you could have!’
Despite Phoebe warning them about the importance of financial responsibility, Holly and Nicholas continued to live impulsively. A few months ago, Holly called Phoebe with big news — they had sold their house and were planning to go on a year-long trip around the world.
‘They’re crazy,’ Phoebe thought, shaking her head. But she kept her concerns to herself. Deep down, she wondered what would happen when their money ran out.
Several months passed. One day, after a long day at work, Phoebe came home to an alarming sight: the living room was filled with suitcases, backpacks, and the sounds of familiar voices. Holly and her family had made themselves at home without a single message or warning.
‘Holly, what are you doing here?’ Phoebe asked, trying to cope with the shock.
‘We’re back!’ Holly replied cheerfully, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. ‘And we’re going to stay here for a while, until we figure everything out.’
It turned out that their ‘year-long adventure’ hadn’t gone as planned, and now Holly and Nicholas had decided to stay at Phoebe’s house indefinitely. To make matters worse, they had used the spare key that Phoebe had given their mother in case of an emergency.
‘I thought you wouldn’t mind,’ Holly said, completely unaware of how wrong it was. But Phoebe was furious. It was her house, her space, and her sister had just moved in without asking!
Nicholas, who never backed down, added, ‘We’re a family, Phoebe. Isn’t that what families are for? You’re not using all this space.’
Overwhelmed with emotion, Phoebe left and locked herself in her bedroom. At that moment, she received a message from her old friend Alex, a notorious prankster from her college days. Suddenly, Phoebe had an idea that might help her get out of this mess.
An hour later, Alex arrived at the house dressed in a police uniform — he had been pranking his friends that day. Phoebe quickly explained the situation, and together they came up with a clever plan.
When Alex knocked on the door and introduced himself as ‘Officer Johnson,’ Holly and Nicholas froze in surprise. With a serious expression on his face, Alex informed them that he was responding to a report of a break-in and asked how they had entered the house.
In a panic, Holly stammered that she had used a spare key, while Nicholas tried to remain calm. But when Alex threatened to press charges for trespassing, they both began to break down. A few minutes later, Holly and Nicholas were hurriedly packing their things and leading the children out of the house.
As soon as they left, Phoebe and Alex burst out laughing. The plan had worked perfectly! Phoebe had finally got her house back, and although it was hard for her to kick her sister out, she knew it was necessary.
As they sat with their steaming cups of coffee, Phoebe reflected on everything that had just happened. Feeling guilty, she also understood that she had every right to stand up for herself. She had worked hard for her home, and no one — not even her family — had the right to take advantage of that.
