‘You’re a whore,’ hissed my mother-in-law Georgia. But before she could insult me, my husband Hans interrupted her.
‘Mum! That’s no way to talk to my wife. Apologise right now!’ he insisted after the chaos my mother-in-law had caused.

Georgia and my father-in-law Manny came to the hospital to see our baby for the first time. They had only seen him in the delivery room, but we asked our family to give us time to get used to our new reality as a family of three.
A month later, we invited our relatives to visit. I was nervous about Georgia and Manny’s visit, even though they had behaved decently at the hospital. Apparently, my mother-in-law loved to criticise and never accepted me.
‘Wait, Hans, you have type B+ blood? I didn’t know that!’ she asked, assessing her son and daughter-in-law.
They came mainly because someone had posted a photo of my baby on social media. The evening promised to be special, so Hans invited them over.
I immediately noticed something strange. My kind attempt to let Georgia spend time with Hans Jr. was met with refusal.
She screamed, shaking her head, ‘I knew it! I knew it! I knew it!’
‘Mum, what do you know? What’s going on?’ Hans asked, puzzled. He glanced at me as if thinking I had the answer, but I was just as stunned by her outburst.

“My grandson is not this child! Hans, listen. This isn’t your son! Barbara cheated on me! Look at him! He has a different nose and skin colour than ours!” Georgia continued, and I was losing my patience.
‘What?’ I exclaimed indignantly.
‘Mum! That’s absurd! You’re wrong. I know this child is my son because Barbara has never cheated on me. 100%!’ Hans stood up for me, but his mother’s face turned red and she looked ready to explode.
Manny raised his hands. ‘There’s a simple solution. Do a DNA test, and the truth will come out,’ he said, shaking his head as if it were an obvious solution. I was in shock.
‘No!’
‘YOU WILL TAKE THIS TEST IMMEDIATELY!’ his mother shouted after a short pause, and I flinched.
‘Enough! Get out of my house. If you don’t want to see your grandson, fine,’ I said, taking the baby into the bedroom.
After another outburst of anger, my husband kicked them out. I stayed in the living room until the baby fell asleep. We decided to limit contact until they apologised.
Unfortunately, my mother-in-law convinced the family that I had cheated on Hans and that the baby wasn’t his. We received messages from everyone — some demanding a DNA test, others humiliating me. It was awful, even from strangers.

In the end, I gave in. My patience was exhausted. With each new notification, my husband’s eyes filled with pain. ‘Do it,’ I said. ‘I said we’ll do a DNA test and get it over with.’ And we did.
The result confirmed that Hans was indeed the father, but we had to remind my mother-in-law and father-in-law to tell them.
‘Can this be faked? What have you done?’ Georgia grumbled when we showed her the results.
‘I didn’t do anything. Hans took the test himself, I wasn’t there,’ I sighed.
‘Yes, Mum, it’s the test you wanted. I’m the father. Now you can stop and enjoy your first grandchild.’ Although he tried to remain calm, I knew how much my husband had suffered. Despite my dislike for her, I decided to be polite for the sake of the child.
‘Fine,’ she replied, folding her arms and not even looking at the baby in the cot. Hans lowered his head, and I stroked his back.
After Manny silently studied the results, he said, ‘Wait, Hans, you have type B+ blood? I didn’t know that,’ he repeated, looking at his son and daughter-in-law.
Hans shrugged. ‘No idea.’
‘Maybe you forgot, or it was in your medical records,’ I suggested, but Manny was still looking only at his wife.
My mother-in-law was silent, but the mocking smile had disappeared. Embarrassed, she looked away and after a moment confessed, lowering her eyes and biting her lip:
‘Manny isn’t Hans’s father. I cheated on him with a family friend. Everything finally became clear.’

‘Is that why you blamed me? You projected your mistakes and thought I was as low as you are?’ I said, raising an eyebrow. My husband touched my shoulder. My sharp tone only made the situation worse, but I was beside myself.
Georgia cried and screamed until Manny got up and left. She followed him, and we let them go. Who wants to deal with family drama like that?
‘Are you okay?’ I asked, hugging my husband.
‘I suppose so… I don’t know how we’re going to deal with questions from my father and my family, but at least we don’t have to worry about our son anymore,’ he replied calmly.
‘That’s a lot to take in.’
‘Yes, but everything will be fine. You and our baby are the most important things.’ Hans turned to me and hugged me. I rested my head on his chest, trying to digest it all.
As for my father-in-law and mother-in-law, they eventually separated, and the family learned the truth. It was a disaster. What’s more, Georgia started dating Hans’s real biological father, her lover. She tried to introduce us to him. The man knew he was Hans’s father after many years of a secret affair. Unbelievable, isn’t it?
My husband put an end to it immediately. Then we completely cut off all communication with her. Manny remains Hans’s biological father. No one else. Despite years of blindly supporting his wife, he got tired of it and apologised for suggesting the DNA test. Now everything is fine, at least for now.
Family events are unpredictable. My husband interrupted her when she was about to insult me and demanded an apology. Then my father-in-law intervened, while my mother-in-law remained silent.

‘Hans, listen to your mother. She was right,’ Manny said calmly. I shook my head. He was so calm; we never had problems with him. But I knew he was giving in to his wife. I didn’t know if he really believed I had cheated or if he just wanted to calm Georgia down.
‘Dad! How can you say that? In our house? In front of my wife?’ Hans asked, and I could feel his pain. These accusations ruined what should have been a wonderful moment.
