My husband gave me a rag for our 10th anniversary, but his sister didn’t have time to finish laughing before karma caught up with her.

He handed me a box, I smiled, opened it, and there was… a rag.

His sister burst into hysterical laughter, almost choking.

The guests froze in amazement.

My heart sank.

Did he really see me as nothing more than a housekeeper?

As Mary applied her make-up, her heart was filled with joy.

She was looking forward to the party her husband had organised to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary.

His parties were always lavish.

He took care of every detail and always did everything perfectly, so there was no reason to think that this evening would be any different.

Among the invited guests were her family, friends and business partners, as well as John’s sister, Lauren, the only person Mary had never been able to get along with.

Lauren was intrusive, greedy, and demanding.

She loved to meddle in other people’s affairs and often made comments and offered advice that drove Mary crazy.

But Mary never said anything because Lauren was her husband’s sister.

That evening, Mary put on her new dress and red high heels and went downstairs to greet the guests.

As expected, Lauren was also wearing red.

Mary knew that Lauren had chosen this colour on purpose, but decided not to let it spoil her mood.

During the evening, when everyone was having fun, John asked the guests to pay attention to him.

He raised his glass and handed his wife a box with a big red bow.

Mary excitedly opened it in front of everyone, but to her surprise, there was a rag inside.

She was shocked and asked in a barely audible voice, ‘John, is this a joke?’

While everyone was looking at Mary and her reaction, Lauren began to laugh uncontrollably and comment loudly that her brother had finally come to his senses and given his housekeeper the right gift.

She also mentioned that she had received an expensive bracelet from John for her birthday, which she was proudly wearing at that moment.

John also smiled and told Mary that it was just a little joke his sister had put him up to, thinking that the guests would find it amusing.

He added that the real gift would arrive later that evening.

Mary was furious.

She felt humiliated and just wanted the evening to end, especially because of Lauren’s words and John’s inability to put his sister in her place for her bad behaviour.

In order not to cause a scene, Mary put the rag on the floor and pretended that nothing had happened.

Lauren, on the other hand, asked everyone if they liked the gift her brother had given Mary and wouldn’t stop talking about it.

Moments later, Lauren, still laughing, slipped on the rag and fell to the floor, breaking the bracelet and tearing her dress.

Some of the guests started laughing, and Lauren decided to leave the party.

Just as she was about to leave, the doorbell rang.

Mary’s real gift had finally arrived — a diamond bracelet.

Karma really does work in mysterious ways.
