MY FIVE-YEAR-OLD CALLED ME IN A PANIC AND SAID, “MY NEW DAD WOKE UP… BUT HE’S BEHAVING STRANGELY.” I RUSHED HOME AS FAST AS I COULD.

Over the next few weeks, we pieced together fragments of his past. It turned out that many years ago, Marcus had been in a car accident that triggered his first episode of dissociative fugue. After that, he redefined himself, burying the painful memories deep inside.

But this is where things got complicated and heartbreaking. During therapy sessions, Marcus discovered that part of his subconscious still believed he was protecting someone from his past life: a child he once cared for deeply. Somehow, Toby reminded him of that child, triggering unresolved emotions and fuelling his erratic behaviour.

As painful as it was to hear, I understood. Love can manifest itself in strange ways, especially when it is intertwined with trauma. The most important thing was to find a way forward — for all of us.

Months passed. Thanks to intensive treatment, Marcus learned to cope with his condition. The dynamics of our family changed too. Toby grew closer to Marcus, seeing him not just as a stepfather, but as someone who genuinely cared about him.

One evening, as we sat around the dinner table laughing, Toby looked up and said, ‘My new dad isn’t weird anymore. He’s just… Dad.’

Tears welled up in my eyes. Despite everything, we had grown stronger.

Life lesson:
This experience taught me that people are often more than they seem at first glance. Sometimes pain hides behind a smile, and love is intertwined with fear. Patience, understanding, and communication can untangle even the most complicated knots.
