My boyfriend left the hotel early and charged me $1350 for the mini-bar and room service – I got creative with the payback

When I walked up to the front desk to check out, Madison greeted me with a warm smile and held out a bill.

I took one look at it and my eyes widened with shock. The total amount was $1,350! Apparently, Nick was constantly using the mini-bar and ordering room service food. My heart raced. Why didn’t he ever talk about this?

I stepped aside and immediately called Nick, but he didn’t answer. I sent him a picture of the note and asked him what was going on. Moments later, a text message arrived, ‘I’m in a meeting. Just take care of the bill.’ I’ve actually booked a room, so you can take care of that.’

I felt a surge of anger, but also confusion. Nick had probably spent a lot of money on the room, and it would be fair for me to pay for all the extra. Reluctantly, I said to Maddison, ‘Okay, I’ll pay for everything. Nick must have spent a lot on the room.’

Suddenly Maddison giggled, making my heart ache. ‘What’s so funny?’ I asked, trying to keep my voice even.

‘The room didn’t cost Sir a cent, ma’am,’ Madison explained. ‘He booked it with the bonuses he got at work. The company pays for his frequent travelling, so this whole stay was practically free for him.’

My face flamed with anger and embarrassment. Nick had tricked me into believing he was throwing me an extravagant weekend getaway and left behind nothing but a hefty bill. I felt a mixture of betrayal and disappointment.

Trying to keep my composure, I held out my credit card to Madison. ‘Just charge it,’ I said in a voice barely above a whisper.

As she processed the payment, I couldn’t escape the feeling of deep resentment. Nick’s behaviour had ruined the beautiful memories we’d made. I had trusted him, and he had taken advantage of that trust.

When Madison returned the card to me, she looked at me sympathetically. ‘I’m so sorry, ma’am. I didn’t mean to upset you.’

‘It’s not your fault,’ I replied, forcing myself to smile. ‘Thank you.’

On the way home, my mind was spinning with thoughts of payback. I couldn’t believe that Nick had left me such a huge bill. When I got to my flat, I already knew exactly what I needed to do.

I sat down at my computer and started creating a social media post. At first it looked like a beautiful story about our romantic trip. I included pictures of the sunset, our dinners and the beach.

But then I added the last few photos: a shot of a $1,350 note, a text message from Nick, and a picture of a giggling receptionist.

The caption read:

‘I had a great weekend thanks to Nick.”🌅 🏖️ 🍽️Everything Everything seemed perfect until Monday morning, when he rushed off to a “work meeting” and left me a bill for $1,350💸 claiming he’d booked the room as a gift. Turns out the room didn’t cost him a cent because it was paid for out of his company’s bonuses. Sometimes the person you trust the most shows up in the most unexpected ways. 💔😠’

I hesitated for a moment, but then hit the post button. Almost immediately, the responses poured in. Friends and acquaintances started leaving comments expressing their shock and sympathy. The post quickly gained momentum.

And then my phone rang. It was Nick. I answered, my voice cold.

‘Clara, what the hell is this post about?’ his angry voice demanded.

‘I was just sharing the truth, Nick. People deserve to know what you’re really like,’ I replied calmly.

‘You need to remove this, now!’ – he shouted. ‘I’m sick of people texting me!’

‘I’m not deleting it. You should have been honest with me,’ I said before hanging up.

I couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction as I watched the comments on my post grow, with people questioning Nick’s honesty and how he had treated me.

I soon noticed that Nick had blocked me and deleted my account in an attempt to avoid a backlash. I couldn’t help but smile. I saved myself a lot of heartache in the future by only losing $1,350.

What would you have done?
