After that came three cell phones.
“I’ve never seen any of those things before,” I said, my voice unsteady.
The officers’ expressions immediately hardened.
Dark possibilities began flashing through my mind. I could already imagine how impossible it would be to explain why stolen belongings had been found in my bag.
Then Walter spoke calmly.
“Another man put all of it there.”
One of the officers turned toward him at once.
“What man?”
“The man in the black jacket. He followed this young man the entire time.”
Slowly, the truth began to take shape.
Apparently, when I had stopped near a short staircase to help Walter with his suitcase, someone had quietly approached me from behind. While my attention was focused on the elderly man, the stranger had slipped several stolen items into the unzipped outside pocket of my backpack.
Walter had seen everything.
At first, he hadn’t understood why the stranger had done it.
But then he noticed that the man in the black jacket didn’t leave. Instead, he continued following us from a distance.
One of the officers immediately radioed the description.
About ten minutes later, the suspect was found near another departure gate.
Airport security had already been searching for him after several passengers reported that their personal belongings had disappeared inside the terminal.
I sank into the nearest seat.
My hands were still shaking badly.
“Why didn’t you tell me right away?” I asked Walter.
The old man chuckled.
“Because you would have started looking around immediately. He would have realized I had seen him and disappeared before the police arrived.”
I remembered the strange words he had spoken during the call.
“And when you told the police, ‘He’s right here beside me’…”
Walter laughed even harder.
“I wasn’t talking about you. At that moment, the man was standing almost directly behind you.”
This time, I laughed too.

Only a few minutes earlier, I had been convinced that an ordinary trip home had turned into one of the worst days of my life.
In reality, the elderly man beside me had just saved me from a situation that would have been incredibly difficult to explain afterward.
Once the officers finished questioning us and everything had been cleared up, I still walked Walter to his gate.
Before heading toward the plane, he suddenly asked:
“Daniel, would you take a picture with me? My granddaughter will never believe that her grandfather called the police at an airport today and helped catch a thief.”
We stood together and took a photo.
Then Walter placed one hand on my shoulder and smiled.
“You helped me carry my suitcase today. I only returned the favor.”

By the time I finally arrived home, I already had a message waiting from Walter.
It contained only one sentence:
“Sometimes good people meet at exactly the moment they need each other most.”
I still have that photograph.
Not because something terrible almost happened to me that day.
I keep it because, throughout our walk across the airport, I truly believed I was the one helping a frail old man.
In the end, I discovered that he had been protecting me all along.
