‘I know,’ I replied gently. ‘That’s why Claire is here. We both need support.’
When Claire started working on Monday, the atmosphere changed immediately. At first, James was reluctant to accept her help, but he soon began to appreciate it. The house became calmer, Lily laughed again, and for the first time in a long time, I saw James smile.
One evening, he was holding Lily in his arms, calm and protected. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said later when we went to bed. ‘I should have been more understanding.’
‘Me too,’ I replied. ‘I should have listened more.’

He took my hand. ‘Claire is wonderful with Lily. It really makes a difference.’
‘I’m glad you think so,’ I smiled. ‘We’ll get through this, James.’
Time passed, and slowly but surely, we began to find each other again. James took on more freelance work, regained his confidence, and found joy in fatherhood. I balanced my intense work schedule with family responsibilities, and although it wasn’t easy, it finally felt like we were fighting together.
One evening, after Lily had gone to bed, we sat on the porch. The stars were shining above us.
‘We’re moving in the right direction,’ James said, putting his arm around me.
‘Yes,’ I replied, leaning against him. ‘I think so too.’
He smiled. ‘I love you, Rachel. And I love our life — as complicated as it is.’

‘I love you too,’ I whispered. ‘We’ve been through worse.’
We stood in silence for a moment, listening to the wind whispering through the trees. For the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful. Perhaps it wasn’t perfection that kept us together, but our willingness to keep fighting, step by step, for the family we had created.
