I bought a wife in Vietnam. A friend’s experience — how much it cost him and whether he is happy with his decision.

Dima literally stunned me with the news when he said that a mutual acquaintance of ours had literally bought himself a wife in Vietnam almost two years ago.
At first, I thought Dima was playing a joke on me 😳👇

I think it’s no secret that the dating business in Vietnam is one of the largest in the Asian region. According to the latest data I found, every year between 300,000 and 400,000 Vietnamese brides are taken abroad by their new husbands.

It turns out that local women are most in demand among Europeans and Americans. I learned this from a friend from France, whom my business partner Dmitry and I visited for a holiday.

This fact did not particularly surprise me, but then Dmitry literally stunned me with the news that our mutual acquaintance from Kazakhstan, Marik (that’s what we call him, his full name is Marhabat), had literally bought himself a wife in Vietnam almost two years ago.

At first, I thought Dima was playing a joke on me, as I haven’t been close to Marik for more than five years, except for formal greetings on holidays. I wrote to Marik on WhatsApp. He confirmed it, and I immediately called him to find out everything.

Marik began by saying that he had followed the example of his third cousin Sabir, who was extremely dissatisfied with the behaviour of local women lately. Sabir believed that Kazakh women allowed themselves too many liberties, especially in relation to their men, and he was tired of looking for one who would suit him in every way.

He found out that he could buy a wife in Vietnam who would be submissive and easy-going, and he did just that. It cost him $7,500 in 2017.

Marik waited a year, saw how things were going for Sabir, and realised that he wanted the same. At the end of 2017, he contacted the same dating agency, and in February 2018, he flew to Ho Chi Minh City to meet his wife.

Now about the prices. The minimum rates at the agency at that time started at $9,000, but my friend did not like the girls presented for this price, to put it mildly.

Marik clearly stated that he wanted a bride no older than 20.

In general, considering Marik’s tastes, he had to pay almost $14,000 for his requests. This already included a formal wedding, registration, and all the bureaucratic procedures. In addition, he was given a certificate stating that everything was official, which indicated that part of the money went to the bride’s family as a dowry (the exact amount was not specified).

The price was also affected by the fact that he chose a girl who supposedly had a good pedigree and came from a decent family. Although Marik understood that he was being blatantly lied to — what respectable family would marry off their child like that? But he really liked that girl.

In addition, the agency offered him an extended guarantee that if the girl ran away, they would find him a new one for free. The extended guarantee cost another $1,500 (the standard guarantee was for one year, the extended one for three).

In the end, Marik spent a total of almost $16,000. And when I asked him the obvious question — was it worth it? — he replied that it was one of the best investments he had ever made.

His wife is incredibly well-mannered. She never allows herself anything unnecessary and never makes a scene. She is always kind and affectionate with him. The house is always tidy. She quickly learned to speak his local language, albeit fluently. She knows English well.

She is extremely unpretentious when it comes to all the newfangled trinkets. No, of course, like any girl, she is happy when her man gives her gifts, jewellery, clothes, but she has never begged him for anything.

P.S. In short, Marik said that she is his ideal woman. And he has not regretted his choice in the slightest.
