I never thought the day would come when Lucas would leave me, but the moment he did, I knew my life was about to change.
It wasn’t just my broken heart — the most painful thing was hearing his arrogant voice when he said he had found someone better, someone younger.
I never expected Lucas to be that kind of person.
We had been together for five years, and although our relationship wasn’t perfect, I always believed that our bond was strong enough to withstand any test.
But one day he came home from work with a smug smile on his face.
‘I think it’s time we split up,’ he said casually, and his words hit me like a slap in the face.
I looked at him, feeling my heart beating wildly.

‘What? What are you talking about?’
‘I met someone. Someone younger. Someone who understands me,’ he said, without even looking at me.
‘It’s time for a change.’
Those words were like a punch in the stomach.
I couldn’t believe it.
How could he so easily throw away everything we had?
But that’s exactly what he did — he left, leaving me with broken dreams and the bitterness of betrayal.
And then the bragging began.
For weeks after our breakup, Lucas didn’t miss a single opportunity to show me his ‘new happiness.’
He posted photos with his new girlfriend, Zoe, on social media — a young woman who seemed to be everything I wasn’t: more carefree, more adventurous and, according to him, more ‘fun.’
Lucas did everything he could to make sure I saw those posts, showing off their “perfect” life.
I had to unfollow him to keep my sanity.
The constant reminders that he had moved on, leaving me behind, were too painful.

But the worst part was hearing what he said about me to our mutual friends.
He said something like, ‘I’m glad I got rid of that burden. It’s time to move on.’
His words hurt me deeply.
I gave him everything — my love, my time, my heart — and he threw me away like a useless thing.
In his eyes, I was just a stepping stone to something ‘better.’
A transitional stage to a younger, more ‘exciting’ love.
The sweet return of karma
Soon, rumours began to reach me.
At first, they were just whispers — nothing concrete.
But then one evening, I ran into an old friend from Lucas’s family, Lily.
We used to be close before everything fell apart.
‘I heard about Lucas,’ she said with a barely perceptible smirk.
‘Do you know what happened to him and Zoe?’
I shook my head, feeling curiosity and anxiety mingling in my chest.

‘Zoe dumped him,’ Lily said with a smile.
‘She left him for his son.’
The words hit me like a freight train.
‘His son?’ I asked, hardly believing it.
“Yes! Can you believe it?
It turns out that Lucas’ son from his first marriage, Ryan, was seeing Zoe behind his back.
And now she’s with him.
They’re even talking about a serious relationship.”
I felt the corners of my lips twitch into a smile.
Karma had finally arrived, and how powerfully.
I wanted to call Lucas right away, but I held back.
Instead, I decided to wait.
I wanted him to experience the same humiliation he had put me through.
It wasn’t long before Lucas came crawling back.
A week later, my phone vibrated with a message from an unknown number.

I almost didn’t open it, but something told me I should.
It was Lucas.
‘Can we talk?’
I stared at the message for a long time before deciding to reply.
‘About what?’
*”I messed up.
Can we meet?”*
I thought for a moment.
I could already picture the desperate look on his face, the guilt in his eyes.
I had something to say to him, but it wasn’t my moment to end the story.
It was his moment to experience the same pain I had experienced.
‘I think you know what you did.’
I didn’t reply and I didn’t meet up with him.
But I found out everything from Lily.
Lucas was devastated.
His pride had been trampled on in the most public way possible.

It was a real blow to the ego of a man who thought he could discard people as easily as he discarded his relationships.
The woman he had left me for had now left him for his own son.
Lucas was in no mood to laugh.
The following weekend, I went to a gathering at a mutual friend’s house.
I wasn’t planning on settling any scores with anyone, but I had a feeling Lucas would be there.
Sure enough, when I walked into the room, he was standing in the corner, looking more awkward than ever.
As soon as I appeared, he looked up and smiled awkwardly.
‘Alina,’ he said in a tense voice.
‘Can we talk?’
‘No, Lucas,’ I replied firmly.
‘I’ve heard enough from you.’
His face flushed, and I turned away, feeling my heart fill with a sense of strength.
He didn’t deserve my time or my attention.

And when I saw him walk away dejectedly, I knew I had done the right thing.
The man who had left me for a ‘younger woman’ had just learned what it felt like to be rejected.
Only this time, he had no one to turn to.
Karma had truly come full circle.
