It is often said that you can only really get to know a person after many years of living together.

I thought I knew my husband Daniel like the back of my hand.
We had been together for over a decade, shared a common path where we grew up, built careers, bought our first home and raised two wonderful children.
There was something native about our routine, a sense of security we’d built over the years.
But that sense of cosiness was soon to be shattered in a way I never expected.
It all happened one Saturday afternoon, as it always does.
Daniel had just returned from a business trip and we sat together in the kitchen, drinking coffee and talking about his week.
Everything seemed normal, almost too normal – as if nothing had changed.
Thank you for taking care of the kids, my dear.
It’s hard to believe the conference lasted this long,” he said, setting his cup on the table.
Anytime,” I replied with a smile. – It must have been a rough week for you, huh?
He smiled and held out his hand to me, a gesture we always used when everyday life tried to keep us apart.

But the moment I looked into his eyes, I noticed something.
He said something that immediately… felt wrong.
Yeah, I know. I’ve waited so long to come back to you, Sarah,” he said completely calmly.
My heart stopped.
I blinked, convinced I was wrong.
But the look on his face when he realised what he’d said confirmed that I’d heard right.
A brief moment of silence followed.
Then Daniel’s face reddened with embarrassment.
I’m sorry. I wanted…I wanted to say your name,” he mumbled, taking his hand away from mine.
But it was too late.
His mistake wasn’t just a misunderstanding.
It wasn’t just an innocent pledge.
In that moment, something changed.
I couldn’t help but think of the name he’d spoken: Sarah.
I didn’t know any Sarah in his life – at least not in a way that made that name matter.
His intonation was so familiar, so natural, as if he’d been saying that name for years.
Who is Sarah? – I asked quietly, almost in a whisper.

He hesitated again, then took a deep breath, clearly surprised by my question.
He ran a hand through his hair and looked away.
It’s nothing. I don’t know why I said it.
It was just a disclaimer, you know, sometimes the brain throws things like that…..
But his words didn’t convince me.
Something was wrong, and the uneasy feeling in me grew stronger and stronger.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d said that name.
It hadn’t been a simple pledge.
There was something familiar in his words – a warmth that was completely foreign to me.
After all these years, after everything we’d built together – why would he call me by any other name?
That night, lying in bed, I tried to shake off the feeling of unease that had taken hold of me.
But sleep wouldn’t come.
Over and over again, that moment played over and over in my head.
Sarah.
Who was she?
Why did Daniel’s voice sound so familiar when he said her name?
Was I missing something?

The next day, I decided to do something I never would have imagined: I checked Daniel’s phone.
I wasn’t proud of it, but the desire for answers was stronger than my respect for his privacy.
I scrolled through his texts, emails, even his social media accounts.
And then I found it-her name.
Sarah wasn’t just a name he casually mentioned.
She wasn’t just a colleague or casual acquaintance.
She was someone he kept in constant contact with.
His messages weren’t just friendly – they were personal, even flirtatious.
Reading them, I felt my heart break into a thousand pieces.
Daniel was hiding something from me, something that had been going on for months.
There were no explicit confessions, no hard evidence, but the tone of their conversations said it all.
She wrote him messages such as: “I miss you. When will I see you again?‘ and ’Last night was perfect. I can’t wait to do it again.”
Daniel answered her with the same tenderness.
I wanted to throw his phone against the wall.
The shock and pain was unbearable.

My hands shook as I continued to search for evidence of his cheating.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
For ten years, I believed we were happy.
We shared everything – dreams, disappointments, hardships, and the joy of raising our children.
How could he keep this from me?
Not only was I consumed by the pain of betrayal, but also by feelings of inferiority.
I began to wonder where I had gone wrong.
Was I not good enough for him?
What did Sarah have that I didn’t?
These questions haunted me, but I wasn’t ready to put him to the choice yet.
I needed time to process everything, to figure out how to deal with this pain.
But when Daniel came home that evening, I couldn’t keep pretending that nothing had happened.
The tension between us was palpable, heavy with unspoken truths.
Daniel,‘ I said in a shaky voice, ’we need to talk.
He looked at me puzzled.

What’s wrong?
I couldn’t hold back any longer.
Who is Sarah?
His face instantly turned pale.
‘What… what do you mean?
I saw the messages,” I said, feeling a hole appear in my chest.
I’ve seen everything. I know about you and her.
A long, unbearable silence followed.
Daniel opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out.
He stared at me, guilt and shame clearly visible on his face.
He took a deep breath and finally said:
I didn’t want you to find out like this…
It’s not what you think. I didn’t mean to hurt you.
You were seeing her in secret, Daniel,” I said, my voice breaking.
How could you do that? After everything we’d been through together?
He sighed and ran his hands through his hair in frustration.
‘It was a mistake…
But I knew it was more than a mistake.

In that moment, I realised that the man I thought was faithful was no longer the same.
And to make matters worse, I wasn’t sure if I could ever forgive him.
