A woman falls in love with a rich man, but when she meets his mother, she turns pale as a ghost.

Emma thought she had found the perfect partner in Stuart, a charming and wealthy man who made her feel truly cherished. Their relationship seemed idyllic until the day she met Stuart’s mother. As soon as their eyes met, Emma turned pale.

What is it about love that makes it so unpredictable? One moment you’re going about your business, and the next you meet someone who could change your life forever.

Emma met Stuart in a café, just like in the movies.

She reached for her coffee, but realised it wasn’t what she had ordered.

At that moment, Stuart grabbed his cup, puzzled by the taste. They exchanged confused glances and then laughed softly.

‘Wrong coffee?’ Stuart asked, holding out his cup.

‘Definitely,’ Emma replied, smiling.

They swapped cups and started talking.

It began with light chatter about coffee preferences, but quickly moved on to more personal topics.

They talked about their favourite books, dreams and childhood memories. Before they knew it, two hours had passed.

‘I can’t believe we’ve been talking for so long,’ Emma said, glancing at her watch. ‘I really have to go. Time has flown by.’

‘Yes, it has,’ Stuart agreed, gathering his things. ‘We should do this again.’

That’s how it all began.

The next few dates were just as wonderful. They walked in the park, watched old films and enjoyed long dinners.

But soon Emma discovered something about Stuart that made her uneasy.

Stuart came from an influential and wealthy family with powerful connections, while Emma had a modest background.

This difference in status bothered Emma, and one evening in a quiet restaurant, Stuart noticed her unease. ‘Is something bothering you?’ he asked gently.

And Emma told him everything. She told him that she didn’t need his money, but that she loved him for who he was.

‘Emma, I like you just the way you are too,’ Stuart assured her. ‘My family and money don’t define me, and they won’t define us.’

His words calmed Emma a little. She saw sincerity in Stuart’s eyes and hoped that maybe their love story would turn out to be as perfect as in the movies.

So that evening, Emma walked home with a light heart, her thoughts occupied with the warmth of her budding relationship with Stuart.

Turning the corner, she noticed an elderly homeless woman sitting on the pavement holding a cardboard sign that read, ‘Please help.’

Emma’s heart ached at the sight. She stopped, took a few dollars out of her purse and held them out to the woman. ‘Here you go,’ she said softly.

The woman looked up with tired eyes. ‘Thank you, dear,’ she whispered, taking the bills with trembling hands.

‘Do you have somewhere to go tonight?’ Emma asked, concerned.

The woman shook her head. ‘No, I usually sleep here.’

‘Well, there’s a shelter not far from here. They can give you food and a place to sleep. Would you like to go there?’ Emma asked.

The woman hesitated, but then nodded. ‘My name is Violet,’ she said.

‘I’m Emma,’ she replied and reached out her hand to help Violet up. Together they walked a few blocks to the shelter.

At the shelter, Emma made sure Violet was taken care of. The staff provided Violet with food, a warm bed, and medical care.

‘Thank you for your kindness, Emma,’ Violet said, her voice stronger after she had eaten.

‘It’s no problem,’ Emma replied. ‘Everyone deserves a little help.’

They talked for a while longer, and Emma began to share details of her life. ‘My parents aren’t wealthy, but I love them very much. I work hard to support myself and them.’

‘Do you have a husband, dear?’

Emma giggled. ‘No, no, I don’t, but I recently met a wonderful guy named Stuart. He’s funny, smart, and loves cats and dogs, just like me.’

‘Does he make good money? He must, if he’s courting such a beautiful girl,’ Violet teased.

Emma smiled. ‘Perhaps, yes. Actually, he comes from a good family. But I’m not interested in his money. I can earn my own, Violet, and I feel blessed for that. The main thing is that we connect on so many levels.’

Violet smiled warmly. “You’re right, dear. Love finds us in the most unexpected places. It’s not where you come from, it’s who you are.”

‘That’s right,’ Emma nodded, feeling a connection with Violet.

Before leaving, she wrote her phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to Violet. ‘I’ll come see you tomorrow, okay?’ she promised.

But when Emma returned to the shelter, Violet was gone. She asked about her, and the staff told her that Violet had left early that morning.

Emma’s heart sank a little, but she hoped that wherever Violet was, she was safe and well.

Two months passed…

‘Stuart, what do you think of this?’ Emma picked up a simple but elegant dress.

Stuart, sitting on the edge of her bed, smiled. ‘It’s perfect. You’ll look beautiful in anything, Emma.’

Emma blushed, her heart pounding with excitement and nerves. ‘I hope your mother likes me. I’m a little nervous about meeting her. I wish your sister were here. Did she really have to go to Italy?’

Stuart stood up and walked over to her, gently placing his hands on her shoulders. ‘Emma, my mum is kind and welcoming. She will love you as much as I do. And if Dad were here, he would be delighted to meet you too.’

His encouraging words helped Emma calm her nerves a little. She took a deep breath and nodded. ‘All right, let’s do it.’

Later that afternoon, they arrived at Stuart’s ancestral estate.

The stately house, with its ivy-covered walls and beautiful manicured gardens, towered above the land. Emma’s heart pounded as they walked up the stone path to the front door.

Stuart squeezed her hand. ‘Ready?’

‘Ready,’ Emma nodded, smiling nervously.

They crossed the threshold of the stately family estate, decorated with lavish decorations and beautiful works of art. Emma’s heart pounded as she gazed at the luxury surrounding her.

‘Welcome home, Stuart,’ a familiar voice greeted them.

Emma looked at the woman and turned pale.

Standing before her was Violetta, no longer the homeless woman she had met on the street, but an elegant and refined lady dressed in stylish attire.

Emma dropped her handbag in surprise.

Stuart bent down, picked up the bag, and handed it back to her. ‘Emma, are you all right? This is my mother, Violet,’ he said with a smile. ‘Mum, this is Emma.’

‘Yes, yes, I’m fine.’ Emma’s thoughts raced through her head as she tried to comprehend the revelation.

Stuart’s mother and sister were his only family since his father had died several years ago.

Emma knew that Stuart’s mother’s name was Violet, but she would never have guessed that she was the woman she had helped on the street.

‘It’s very nice to meet you, Emma,’ Violet stepped forward and gave her a warm hug.

Emma managed to return the hug, but her mind was still in turmoil. ‘I’m… very pleased,’ she managed to say.

When they entered the house, Violet whispered in Emma’s ear, ‘Please keep our first meeting a secret. I needed to know the true nature of the woman my son loves.’

Emma forced herself to smile, but deep down she was furious. How could Violet test her like that?

And when Stuart left for a moment, leaving Emma and Violet alone, Emma could no longer contain herself.

‘Why did you do that?’ she asked Violet furiously. ‘Testing me like that was cruel, Violet!’

‘I had to make sure you loved Stuart for who he is, not for his wealth, Emma. And you passed with flying colours, dear.’

‘I understand your intentions, but it was still deceitful. I genuinely care about Stuart, and I would have appreciated honesty from the start!’

Violet nodded remorsefully. ‘You’re right. I was wrong to deceive you. I apologise, Emma. I sincerely apologise.’

Emma took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. ‘Thank you. I accept your apology, but I will need time to fully trust you again.’

At that moment, Stuart returned. ‘Is everything all right?’ he asked.

Emma smiled awkwardly. ‘Yes, everything’s fine.’ She glanced at Violet, who nodded understandingly.

They moved to the dining room for lunch, and the luxurious surroundings made Emma even more nervous.

Stuart pulled out a chair for Emma. ‘Here, sit next to me.’

‘Thank you,’ Emma smiled as she sat down.

Violetta took a seat opposite Emma. “I hope you like Italian food, Emma. Our chef has prepared a special menu today.”

‘I love Italian food,’ Emma replied, feeling a little calmer. ‘It smells wonderful.’

Stuart chuckled. ‘Wait until you taste it. The chef here is amazing.’

As soon as the first course was served, Stuart began sharing stories. ‘Did I ever tell you about the time I tried to build a tree house? It was a disaster.’

Violet laughed. ‘Oh, yes. You had to call a carpenter to fix it.’

Emma giggled. ‘I’d love to see that tree house sometime.’

Violet leaned forward. ‘Emma, what do you like to do in your free time?’

‘I love to read and spend time outdoors. Stuart and I often go hiking on the weekends.’

Stuart nodded. ‘Emma is great at finding the best trails. She also enjoys volunteering.’

‘That’s wonderful,’ Violet said approvingly. ‘You clearly have a kind heart.’

Emma smiled sincerely, realising that Violet meant well for Stuart. Although her methods were questionable, Violet did not want to harm him.

As the evening drew to a close, Violet gave Emma a warm hug. ‘I’m glad you passed the test,’ she whispered playfully.

When her anger subsided, Emma giggled. ‘Me too.’

Returning to the car, Stuart took Emma’s hand. ‘Tonight was wonderful. Did you like Mum?’

‘Yes, I did. She’s lovely,’ said Emma, deciding to keep her first meeting with Violet a secret.
