A former Oscar-nominated actress and Hollywood beauty icon: Can you guess who she is now, at the age of 83?

Sam Elliott — a veteran of the silver screen and an undisputed icon of the Western genre — has spent over half a century in Hollywood, becoming almost synonymous with the genre. His deep, distinctive voice and characteristic moustache made him the perfect fit for roles as tough, memorable characters. He began his career with cameos in classic Westerns, but his breakthrough came in 1976 with the non-Western film Lifeguard. On the set of The Legacy in 1978, his professional and personal lives converged — it was there that he grew close to the actress Katharine Ross, whom he had met earlier when she starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and he was merely an extra. Their relationship led to their marriage in 1984 and the birth of their daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott.

Born in Sacramento, California, but raised in Oregon, Elliott took from his home a strong sense of duty and a work ethic instilled in him by his father. Although he studied for a short time, it was a role in a school production of Guys and Dolls that sparked a true passion for acting in him. Moving to Los Angeles was a step towards his dreams — there he studied acting whilst serving in the California Air National Guard. His distinctive voice, which gained widespread recognition thanks in part to adverts for the American Beef Council, provided him with financial stability and the freedom to choose roles based on the quality of the script rather than financial considerations.

Over the years, Sam Elliott has remained a constant presence in the world of film, observing the changing face of the industry at close quarters — from technological revolutions to new forms of storytelling. Despite these changes, storytelling and the quality of the script remain his top priorities.

Although his appearance and voice are mainly associated with the Wild West, Elliott has played a wide range of roles. He recalls with a smile a situation where a director asked him to speak “a little less with a Southern accent”. Sam admits that he prefers roles that evoke positive emotions or reflection — he avoids playing villains that might tarnish his image.

The love between Elliott and Ross, which blossomed on the set of The Legacy, eventually blossomed into a lasting, mature marriage based on mutual respect and a shared determination to overcome adversity. Ross, an acclaimed actress known for her roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and numerous television westerns, shares a ‘common sensibility’ with Elliott.

Their professional collaborations, such as Conagher, for which Elliott received a Golden Globe nomination, or their joint performance in the play Love Letters, highlight their artistic chemistry. The strength of their relationship lies in their mutual love and their desire to face life’s ups and downs together.

Katharine Ross, who has always been passionate about horses, began her acting career in San Francisco before moving into television, particularly Westerns. She was inducted into the National Cowboy Museum’s Hall of Fame for Great Western Actors seven years after her husband. Ross herself admits that it was Elliott’s voice, moustache and rugged charm that drew her to him for good. Together, they form one of Hollywood’s most respected and enduring couples — their relationship is a story of shared passions, mutual support and a constant readiness to face any storm together.
