The first thing Elaine Whitmore noticed was the silence.

The sound ripped across the yard. Birds exploded from the roof of the barn. A dog barked from somewhere near the porch. The farmhouse door opened.

“The house,” she whispered.

She gave them the address.

Then Elaine called her lawyer, Naomi Vale.
Naomi had represented Elaine for fourteen years. She was calm, precise, and terrifying to people who mistook paperwork for protection.

Elaine looked through the glass wall at Mara lying beneath a white blanket, smaller than she had looked at twelve years old.
