Julia Roberts is arguably one of the most famous actresses in the world. Her films topped the box office charts in the 1990s, and even now she remains a heavyweight in the world of Hollywood.
But her personal life had its share of ups and downs until she met the man she considered ‘the one’…
Julia Roberts often played roles in which she was opposed to or afraid of marriage. Just like in her famous role in Runaway Bride, she found it difficult to settle down, and she was even engaged to several famous actors before she decided to get married. In the past, the actress was engaged to Liam Neeson and Kiefer Sutherland.
According to Closer Weekly, she was first linked to Liam Neeson in 1987, but they split up just a year later. After that, she began dating Dylan McDermott and, rumour has it, was even engaged to him. But that too came to an end, and she began dating Kiefer Sutherland. However, a few years after meeting Kiefer, she broke things off with him as well.
After two failed engagements, one after the other, Roberts surprised everyone by marrying Lyle Lovett in 1993. But the marriage didn’t work out, and soon, in 1995, the couple divorced. The actress dated a number of Hollywood actors, and then, whilst working on the set of The Mexican, she met Danny Moder.
Unlike her previous boyfriends, Moder wasn’t famous, but that didn’t bother the actress in the slightest. However, there was one problem. Moder was still married to his first wife, Vera Steimberg, when he met Roberts. But his marriage soon fell apart, and after that he had a wonderful relationship with Roberts.
The couple tied the knot in 2002. Over the course of more than 20 years of marriage, they have had three children: twins Finneas and Hazel, and a son, Henry.
Although Roberts is known for keeping her private life out of the spotlight, in 2018 she shared with Gwyneth Paltrow on the GOOP podcast how Moder made her feel. She said: ‘I think the first real “seismic shift” was meeting Danny, marrying Danny… That was the first ‘my life will never be the same’ in the most incredible, indescribable sense.”
She also spoke about how deeply she loves and cherishes her husband: “He really is, to this day and to this day, simply my favourite person… I’m interested in his words and his point of view (more) than anyone else’s. It’s true, we’re very lucky in that respect. We just love each other very, very much and simply enjoy each other’s company,”
She went on to explain their love for one another. She said: ‘We’ve been married for 16 years, we’ve been together for 18… It just gets deeper and deeper, more and more complex.’
She also added that marriage is an adventure, and you never know if it will work out until you’re actually in it.
She said: ‘…you’re young, in love and thinking: “Yes, we’ll get married, build a house and have children”, and all those things we all seem to dream of, but you don’t know if you’ll like the same sofa, and you don’t know if he’ll want to buy patterned towels.’
“You just don’t know these things until you’re actually together, and we’re so lucky that there’s a certain natural harmony in our relationship,” said the actress, adding: “He’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
In 2020, an insider shared details about the couple’s relationship. They said: “[Roberts and Moder] really feel like soulmates,” and added: “The chemistry between them is just incredible.” “After all this time, Julia still finds Danny incredibly sexy, and he still adores her.” The couple “intend to stay together for the long haul, whatever it takes,” they concluded.
