The iconic photo of Sophia Loren and Jane Mansfield, recreated by Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen What Sophia Loren said about her iconic photo with Jane Mansfield

You’ve probably seen the photograph of Sophia Loren and Jane Mansfield.

Joe Shera took this picture in 1957 at a dinner party organised by Paramount for Sophia Loren.

Joe captured the moment when Loren glanced at Jane’s cleavage. It became one of the most famous photographs in the world of cinema of the last century.

In a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sophia Loren revealed the story behind the sidelong glance in the photograph:

“The whole film industry was there, it was incredible. And then Jane Mansfield arrived, the last of those who came. For me, it was a stunning moment. She walked right up to my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And then, she was already barely… Listen. Look at the picture.

Where are my eyes? I’m looking at her nipples because I’m afraid they’re about to end up on my plate.

You can see the fear on my face. I’m so afraid that everything in her dress is going to burst — BOOM! — and scatter all over the table.

Modern Family actors Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen recreated the Mansfield-Lauren photo.
