Soon Jake also found a job in the factory, then it seemed that things were slowly getting better. It was time to think about having a child, but here life sent them a test again. There were only two things that saddened the couple: that they could not have children, and that Mary’s father had not lived to see such marriages become the norm. Mrs Jacobson had never received her parents’ blessing, and this fact upset her greatly.

Now people with dark skin had the same rights as white people. And who would have thought seventy years ago that America would have a dark-skinned president, and such marriages would be far from rare?
