‘Earth Song’ is one of his major hits, which in light of modern disasters and natural calamities sounds more relevant than ever. Michael started working on the song in 1988, during his tour in Austria. The song was originally called ‘What About Us’ – ‘What About Us?’ in Russian.
It took seven years to create the hit, and now we can see that this long and painstaking labour was fully justified. Jackson repeatedly rewrote the vocal parts, leaving the most difficult moments for last. As Michael himself said, during the climax he literally ‘killed’ his voice to convey all the emotions.
