In an attempt to revamp its image as a junk food restaurant, McDonald’s has slowly been rebranding itself as a fast-casual dining chain.
Aside from adding new items to its menu including healthier options like pico guacamole-topped chicken burgers, the biggest change that has taken place so far is the decision to stop using artificial additives in their food and drink recipes.
Joining the ranks of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, McDonald’s recently broke the news about their move away from artificial coloring, flavoring and preservatives and they’re celebrating the change in the best way possible.

What many people don’t know is that McDonald’s reportedly started getting rid of artificial flavors and high-fructose corn syrup last fall. By the end of 2016, 60% of their desserts including the vanilla cone, McFlurry and shakes have all been switched to all-natural ingredients.
«We’ve been raising the bar at McDonald’s on serving delicious food that our customers can feel good about eating,» said Darci Forrest, senior director of menu innovation.
To celebrate this big and welcomed change, McDonald’s is giving away free ice cream this upcoming weekend!
To celebrate their new soft serve recipe and help you beat the sweltering heat, McDonald’s will be giving away free cones this weekend. The special offer also coincides with National Ice Cream day so you have every excuse to treat yourself to a delicious cold dessert.
To get the free ice cream you’ll need to download the McDonald’s mobile app first. Then look out for the free cone offer under «my deals» on Sunday, July 16th and redeem it at your nearest participating restaurant between 2pm and 5pm.
In addition to the freebie, McDonald’s is holding a contest in which you could win soft serve for life. When you claim your free cone on Sunday, you’ll be automatically entered to win. The prize will be awarded in the form of a McDonald’s Arch Card and a check for $4,680 which equals to about one cone per week for 50 years.
